The Pasty Tax protests heat up!

Well, it seems like the protest against the Government’s proposed ‘Pasty Tax’ has been taking some tips from us!

Hundreds of Cornish pasties (In fact, enough to feed 650 MPs) were sent from Cornwall to Westminster at an event to show politicians just how damaging the tax will be to Cornwall’s economy. We’re wondering just how big the hamper would have to be!

Join the Pasty Tax Protest March this Saturday!

We’ve already mentioned this on our Facebook page, but we think it definitely deserves another one on our blog!

This Saturday, the 29^th April, a march will be held in Falmouth to protest against the government’s proposal of adding 20% tax to all hot food. Of course, this will include the humble Cornish pasty, and the harmful effects of this have already been mentioned in a previous blog.

Starting at 2pm on The Moor in Falmouth, the march will then head through the town, finishing at the Events Square. At the Square, there will be two Cornish bands, speakers (Including MPs, politicians and business owners), and of course plenty of Cornish food and drink!

This march is a fantastic way to send a really strong message to Downing Street that the Pasty Tax is a real threat to Cornwall’s food industry, and it really deserves your support! Send a Cornish Hamper for Father’s Day

I know it may be a couple of months away yet, but there’s no harm in having an early look at what to get your dad for Father’s Day.

Help fight the Pasty Tax!

We often visit Cornwall Food & Drink’s website, and this morning I saw this article that I just have to share with you all, as it affects the entire Cornish food industry.

You may remember my blog from a couple of days ago about how the Government’s proposed ‘Pasty Tax’ will cause a lot of issues for Cornwall. Well, Cornwall Food & Drink are putting together a response to the government on behalf of the Cornish bakery industry. They are asking for all Cornish bakers and pasty makers to complete their questionnaire and email it back to them as soon as possible. Full details are at the link below, so if you can help please take the time to fill it in!

If you don’t own your own bakery or pasty shop but would like to show your support, there is a national protest planned for Thursday, 26^th April. It is starting at Pudding Lane and finishing at Downing Street. It would be fantastic to have a strong turnout from Cornwall, so everyone who can should attend! You could even take one of our Cornish food hampers to keep the troops going!

Cornish pride for the Olympic Games

With less than 100 days to go to the Olympic Games in London, I was thrilled when I read that a 13 year old girl from Padstow names Jenni Buckley has been chosen to be an Olympic Torchbearer.

What makes this story special, though, is that she was born prematurely at 26 weeks, weighing only 2lbs and spending 3 months in a Special Care Baby Unit. She’s now completely sports-mad, joining Padstow United youth Football Club at the tender age of 6. She has since played against many football teams across the country and represented her school at district level in athletics.

It’s fantastic to see someone so young, dedicated and talented representing Cornwall. Getting to carry the Olympic Torch is a huge honour, and I hope Jenni has a fantastic time doing so!

The Olympic Torch will be carried through the UK over 70 days by 8,000 torchbearers. It will be heading through Cornwall on the 19^th May, where it will start in Land’s End and finish in Plymouth for an evening celebration on the Hoe.

Unfortunately the torch isn’t heading anywhere near us, so we’ll be representing Cornwall how we always do: Creating delicious Cornish gift hampers and sending them all across the country!

Porthleven Food Festival – April 21st

If you’re looking for something to do in Cornwall this weekend, why not head down to the Porthleven Food Festival on Saturday, April 21^st? Situated in South Cornwall, Porthleven is a picturesque harbour town making it a wonderful place to spend the day.

The festival itself is a great celebration of Cornish food and music. Based around the theme Fit For Food, celebrating the 2012 Olympics, there are activities for the whole family such as cookery demos and performers. You can also pick up some great Cornish gifts from the stallholders, which include our friends and partners from Kernow Chocolate.
